I was wondering which would be better for gw2 or a gaming pc. The core i5 is 2310, the i7 is 2600.

Neither one would be particularly better, but the i7 is overkill. For a gaming rig you don't need anything more than an i5-2500. (In games the Hyper threading of the i7-2600, is of no benefit.)

Thanks alot for your response! Is i5 2310 good enough for most games? I am sorry about not being clear I did not know there were multiple types of i5. I will change the title to suit.

Cant you get an i5-2400 atleast (for the second option)? Its better and they should be the same price unless I'm missing something.

EDIT: you updated your first post, the i7 is better than the i5 but as Quaker said, you don't really need anything more than an i5 for gaming

If you are asking about this game, they are both overkill.

The I5 would make a solid gaming rig, but if you have a choice I say go with the I7, save your money for a year or so, and get the next generation Nvidia at that point, since AMD is doing to the Radeon what they did to their microchip business.

The simpler cores are best for gaming. An i5 with >3ghz is best.

If you get an i5 then make sure you go for a 2500k series. The 'K' means it's unlocked thus overclocking is possible. With a decent air/water cooler you can easily bump the 2500k up to 4.5Ghz (and beyond), which will be plenty, in terms of processing power, to keep up with gaming over the next few years.

If you do go for the i5 2500K or i7 2600k, then make sure you get a motherboard and gfx card which can keep up with with the CPU, otherwise you will end up with too much CPU power that you won't be able to use to get max performance out of your system. A "bottleneck".

I would recommend either a P67 or Z68 chipset motherboard (ASUS, MSI, and Gigabyte provide great versions of these), and a GTX 560/570/580 (or ATi equivalent) graphics card to go with it.

You may know all this already, which is great if you do, but just remember that you need to balance your system to get ma performance from it.

Yes, the i5-2310 is good enough for most games. There are many versions of i5s - the main difference being the clock speed.

As you can see, the 2310 is 2.9GHz, the 2400 is 3.1GHz, and the 2500 is 3.3GHz. It may be worthwhile to go for a 2400 or 2500 if the price bump is not too much. (I don't think the i5-2310's lack of "embedded options" will matter much to gaming)
